My company denied my vacation request.

Company I've worked for for nearly a decade denied my vacation request (2 weeks) because "that's what people who are quitting do" when they take such a big chunk of time off. Oddly enough, this came from a VP who just came back from 3 weeks in Florida.

AreaLeftBlank OP. 18 hr. ago I talked to them a little later about it because it was still bugging me. Even if someone wasn't wanting to quit and in this situation, the way they handled could certainly be the deciding factor for quitting

KoalaOriginal1260. 18 hr. ago . edited 14 hr. ago Getting a two-week vacation request denied was one of my final straws at a job. I'd taken a temporary promotion to fill in for my boss's year-long leave so she could go with her partner on their sabbatical. The person who we hired as my replacement quit with three months to go, and it wouldn't have made sense to fill the job, so I did both for that stretch. It was quite busy. No big deal.

I neglected to schedule in my vacation when it would have been me approving it. I got to it after my boss returned. Scheduled it for a dead time in our work cycle (mid-august at a university). 1 of the two weeks was denied because we "needed minimum coverage" (there would be no work to cover and I'd provided coverage for literal months as the boss).

I sat there for a week where there was literally no need to be at work. The students we served were not on campus. A month later, I get a note from my boss saying that I really needed to schedule my vacation time as I was carrying too much and needed to take it by year end. With fall semester in full swing, there was literally no operationally convenient time for me to add a week of time off in by that point. I left not long after.

Pontius-Pilate · 19 hr. ago Resubmit with an alteration to the slip. Remove Request, put Notice. Vacation Notice. Not a request. S7bmit with the understanding you WILL be gone from date to date. And it would be appreciated if they let you know if your job will be there upon return or is the VP enforcing what he's crying about. Then go.

AreaLeftBlank OP.19 hr. ago When he was in my office telling me about it I told him it wasn't a request. Either I'm off for two weeks vacation days or I'm off for two weeks with pay (salary) and two weeks of vacation days to use at a later date. Either way I'm not gonna be there.

Additional_Move5519. 18 hr. ago Vacation time is best described as Accrued Terminal Leave with this type employer. Negotiate a higher hourly rate with no paid time off.

AreaLeftBlank OP. 17 hr. ago Pay is literally 95% of our turnover reasons. We (I) am very liberal with peoples time off, requests windows etc. People leave not because of the environment I've helped create but because the bean counters above me won't entertain raises even at my level let alone those "below" me

Additional_Move5519. 16 hr. ago You get your raises from your NEXT employer. You know, the position they are desperate to fill and have to loosen their purses to make happen. Best thing you can do for yourself is never forget that you are in a marketplace.

coffeejunkiejeannie. 16 hr. ago I agree with vacation notice. I tend to put in for my PTO well in advance....i am being more than courteous and giving them a heads up that I will be on vacation whether they approve it or not. I had an employer deny PTO for my wedding, which I put in for 9 months in advance, I told them I was going to no show, and they would know where I was. I made sure to line up a new position after that.

AreaLeftBlank OP 19 hr. ago Funny enough, that's what the time off is going to be used for. Scoping out another job/career

AreaLeftBlank OP. 18 hr. ago I work in a struggling industry at a dying company. I truly thinks it's easier to let people at my level quit than pay a severance package and the whole shebang.
